Freedom-Kai Phillips, Cameron A. Miles, Dr Ashfaq Khalfan, Dr Maria Leichner Reyna
Sustainable Development Goal 6 on Water and Sanitation (SDG 6 Water) commits to “ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all”, highlighting the need to ensure access to water and sanitation for all, and to care for the water resources necessary for sustainable development. This analysis focuses on the support for SDG 6 Water found in treaties such as the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, the UN Convention on the Law of the Non-navigational Uses of International Watercourses (New York Convention), the Convention on the Protection and Use of Transboundary Watercourses and International Lakes (Helsinki Convention), and the Convention on Wetlands of International Importance especially as Waterfowl Habitat (Ramsar Convention), illustrating synergies, complementarity and compatibility in the implementation of SDG 6 on water and sanitation.
