The Charles D. Gonthier Legacy project was initiated to commemorate the significant impact that he had upon several generations of Canadian and international jurists. Charles D. Gonthier is recognised in many legal areas for his contributions to jurisprudence, as a judge on the Quebec Superior Court, the Quebec Court of Appeal or finally the Supreme Court of Canada. Charles D. Gonthier’s worldview rested upon values that he considered integral for a just, equitable and fraternal society, namely responsibility, fraternity and sustainability. The Charles D. Gonthier legacy project purports to pay a tribute to the continuing and living legacy of a great jurist by encouraging analysis and providing venues for the continuation and dissemination of legal scholarship in a variety of fields based on the worldview of Charles D. Gonthier.
To further this objective, the Charles D. Gonthier legacy committee has engaged in 3 ambitious projects. The first was to hold an international legal symposium in memory of the honourable Charles D. Gonthier on the themes of ‘Responsibility, Fraternity and Sustainability in Law.’ The symposium, which was recognised as a great success, took place on May 20-21 2011 at the McGill Faculty of Law in Montreal. The proceeding and video clips of the symposium are available online at this website. The second project is the upcoming publication of a mélange in tribute to Charles D. Gonthier, which will be based on the papers prepared by the many eminent speakers at the symposium in May 2011. The papers will be published at a special edition of the Supreme Court Law Review, and the mélange will be published by Lexis Nexis in 2012. The third project is the organisation of an annual lecture series in memory of the honourable Charles D. Gonthier. The bilingual lecture series will take place every year or every two years, depending on available funds, at the McGill University Faculty of Law in Montreal. A prominent speaker selected by a distinguished committee will be invited to speak on a theme related to Charles D. Gonthier legal worldview. The lecture series will be funded by an endowment set up at McGill University. The legacy committee is currently seeking for donations to contribute to the legacy committee.
